Welcome to the Couture Party Skirt Class taught on zoom with Barbie McCormick. We are super excited to bring these sewing skills to the community. Each class will be dedicated to lecture, demonstration, and questions. Students will complete the work independently between sessions. The goal is for everyone to finish a skirt. You can construct a sample or muslin if you like, I just ask that we are working together with the goal of completing the process together. Please purchase the skirt prior to class. The skirt includes three lengths - short, tea, and floor or a yoked version featured here. (27" is almost done) Link to purchase pattern here.

Sundays March 8th, 15th, 22nd, 28th 12 - 2 or 29th 9-11 this is Palm Sunday so depending if students celebrate this holiday we are flexible, and I am happy to host a fifth session to show and discuss finished skirts as well at a later date to motivate finishing the project.

There are no recordings. If you cannot make a class we can fill you in. Please take notes during class.
One week before class everyone will receive the zoom links and any special supplies you may need to prepare for, regarding zoom please test your connection prior to class. Party Skirt Zoom Classes Outline:
Class 1)
Intro to the skirt and design features. Overview of couture sewing techniques used.
Using Half Scale forms:
Demonstration/ walk through of tracing off the muslin and assembly of the muslin.
Using the pleat stays
Basic fitting guidelines for the muslin.
Demo on fitting yourself, checking for level waist, length of skirt.
Overview of different types of hair braid, twill tape, zippers, underlinings.
Sewing in adjustments, verifying that the muslin is correct, marking new lines.
Class 2)
Picking your fabric
Pairing your underlining
Using Half Scale Forms
Tracing corrected pattern to underlining, cutting
Thread tracing underlining to fashion fabric
Assembling the skirt front and skirt back
Proper pressing, trimming, and grading of seams
Options for seam finishes- pinking, overcasting, hongkong, etc
Using pleat stay to pleat skirt front and skirt back
Sewing side seams
Pin/ Baste hairbraid in hem, pin hem for fitting.
Class 3)
Half scale:
Prep the waistband
Straight
Contour
Yoke
Check the fit of the waistband
Baste to the skirt
Check fit of waist (with weight of skirt), check hem length and fullness.
Make adjustments.
Sewing in the hairbraid
Hem prep (trimming, gathers, finishing, etc).
Class 4)
Finishing:
Insert zipper
Finish waistband (Straight, contour, yoke)
Finish hem
Optional lining
Mark/ cut
